Realizing your favorite musician will never again produce music or that your favorite actor won’t ever appear in any new TV shows or movies is never a nice day.
Of course, the careers of our most beloved artists typically come to an end only by death.
Many artists continue to create work well into their 80s and 90s, and as they age, we can see how their styles grow and develop.
Russell Crowe, the Gladiator actor, said he is considering ending his career a day before his 60th birthday. This means we may never get to see the Hollywood heavyweight age on screen.
For more than three decades, Russell Crowe has been a titan of the film business, but his recent remarks at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival have alarmed even his most ardent followers.
The seasoned actor, who will turn 60 in a year, openly discussed the possibility of retiring early from the film business, saying he had thought about the possibility that living in obscurity would actually improve his life.
Crowe said of getting older: “You are standing in front of the mirror, and go: Who the f— is that?’ I am in that period now.
“I will take Ridley Scott as my role model: he is still discovering new things in his work. Or I will just stop and you will never hear from me again. I haven’t decided what it’s going to be. These are two very valid choices.”
Ridley Scott, then 85, and Crowe worked together on the acclaimed Gladiator movie in 2000. According to his IMDb page, he has up to 20 planned projects.
Meanwhile, Crowe is listed as having eight films in development.If such is the case, it may take some time before his admirers start lamenting his exit from the entertainment business.
He is working on several documentaries that he intends to release in the future. The man, 59, said:
“In order to release them, I have to make them legally comfortable. And to me, that destroys the point. So I just have to wait longer, wait for some people to die, and then I can put them out.”
